Particularities of media systems in the West Nordic countries

2021 •

Ragnar Karlsson

This study compares the media systems of the West Nordic countries, namely the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. All three countries are democratic welfare states with considerable institutional transfer from the larger Nordic countries. It is argued that the West Nordic media systems fit into the “Nordic model” when it comes to the perception of media as cultural institutions as well as the central role of public service media. On the other hand, the micro-size of the media systems in the West Nordic countries makes them vulnerable, and makes editorial independence more difficult compared with their larger Nordic neighbours. In particular, media outlets within these micro-size media systems seem more susceptible to clientelism, and journalists seem more inclined towards self-censorship. This article highlights how interplay between small size and distinct local factors shape the media system in each of the West Nordic countries.

The independent press, popular public service broadcasting, and strong state-support mechanism have remained as fascinating features of the Nordic media system that follow the Democratic Corporatist Model in journalistic practices. Democratic Corporatist Model is a strong key of the Nordic media with common features like high circulation and readership of Newspapers, a high degree of professionalism, and the role of the state in financing. The Nordic media market is a mix of public and private ownership, hence state-owned media seems to predominate most of the media houses. In the front face, Nordic media has gained a positive image of free and strong press but on the other hand, state- intervention, and broadcasting monopoly have raised a serious concern over the sustainability of the Nordic media model. Therefore, the argument on whether this model will continue or change seemed remarkable to be discussed further in relation to increasing digital influences in the Nordic media.

Participatory journalism - How Swedish Public Service is Taking Part in the National Conversation and the Concept of Spreadable Media

Jonas Appelberg

Social media is a big part of many swedes lives today and more and more people live their lives just as much online than they do offline. The journalists find themselves in a new converged media landscape with multiple channels to work in and also new ways to communicate with their audience. By analyzing strategic documents and by doing a semi-structured interview study this paper shows how two of the swedish public service media companies, Swedish radio and Swedish television, work with their social media strategies and how these strategies affect how the journalists themselves use social media as a part of the work process. The theories of which the study is grounded in are those of participatory cultures, converged cultures and spreadable media. In short how people of today communicate with each other and what information is more likely to be spread and why. By getting an understanding of these theories, the media companies could achieve the goal of having a good relationship with their audience at the same time that they produce good journalism. This paper can show that swedish public service media is very much in tuned with these theories on many parts when it comes to both their visions, strategies and actual usage regarding social media, but also that they have some ground to cover when it comes to making the audience go from active spectators to active participants on a wider scale.

Nordic Media: Similarities and Changes in the Digital Age

Francis Therrien

The Nordic region is sometimes seen as a politically hom*ogenous ensemble. This assumption has yet to be assessed on certain issues and this paper attempts to address that, on the degree of similarity of their media systems. We also propose that this similarity is dynamic, so that the key forces of continuity and change in the Nordic media at the digital age are important to consider. Briefly, those forces have produced change mostly in terms of commercialisation and digitalisation on the public broadcasters, especially at the structural and policy levels.

Media Studies the Nordic Way: Formations and futures

2020 •

Kirsten Drotner

Based on an overview of Anglo-American stocktaking of media and communication studies, this article situates Nordic media studies as a third route staked out between academic binaries of administrative and critical approaches. The key argument is this: Nordic media studies displays distinctive features of development that are shaped by Nordic welfarist ideals from the 1970s and 1980s rather than by international trends in the academy. Furthermore, these ideals are worth holding on to if the field of media studies is to thrive with quality and relevance in a globalised, connected, and deeply datafied platform society. I take media studies – not communication studies – as my point of departure, since this is the most feasible umbrella term when studying current modes of communication that are technologically mediated in ways that can be stored, shaped, and shared across time and space.

A neoliberal media welfare state? The Swedish media system in transformation

2021 •

Johan Lindell

The concept of the Media Welfare State describes Nordic specificity in how media are organized and how they serve a lively and inclusive democracy. This article engages in a dialogue in regards to the contention that this media system has persisted in the midst of rapid social change. We synthesize previous research and documented changes in media policy in Sweden, covering the last three decades, to show the ways in which the Swedish media system has undergone significant transformations. Media use is becoming more polarized and connected to social class. The state is retreating from its involvement in media policy; consequently, the press and public service media are facing unprecedented challenges. Finally, the "consensual" relation between media companies and the state, which is said to be typical for the media welfare state, no longer characterizes the media market. While some of the features of the media welfare state system remain in Sweden, the current media system is best characterized as a neoliberal media welfare state. The article discusses tensions and conflicts in the existing model and possible future developments.
